LIVING WITH WISDOM AND DISCERNMENT

« Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise,
making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. »
(Ephesians 5:15-17)

The apostle Paul draws our attention to the way we live. Each day is a gift from God, but we can either use it wisely or waste it.
For this reason, Paul gives us three essential principles:

1. Live with Prudence

Life is full of traps, distractions, and false paths. Someone who walks carelessly is like a traveler crossing a dangerous road with closed eyes.
Paul calls us to open our spiritual eyes and pay attention to our words, choices, friendships, and priorities.

Jesus Himself gave us the example when He refused to fall into the devil’s trap in the wilderness (Matthew 4:7).
Satan wanted Him to act presumptuously, but Jesus answered: “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.” In the same way, we must avoid reckless decisions and walk in the prudence that comes from God’s Word.

2. Redeem the Time

Time is a treasure that no one can buy back once lost. Many say: “I will do it tomorrow”, but tomorrow is never guaranteed.
To redeem the time is to seize each opportunity to love, serve, forgive, share the Gospel, and grow in our calling. Every moment must count for eternity.

Sometimes an opportunity may look perfect — a business deal, a relationship, or a career path. Everything may look right, but without discernment it can become a trap.
That’s why it is essential to stop, pray, and ask the Lord for direction.

3. Seek the Will of God

It is not enough to run in all directions; we must run in the right one. To understand God’s will is to seek His face through prayer, His Word, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Those who walk in His will are not in confusion but in peace and assurance.

Isaiah 11:2-3 reminds us that the Spirit of the Lord is “the Spirit of wisdom and understanding.” God’s wisdom goes beyond appearances and helps us discern truth from deception. Very often, inner peace is the sign of His guidance. If peace is absent, do not let anyone pressure you into a decision you will regret.

Practical Example

A wise student organizes his time to prepare for exams, while a careless one wastes it in distractions. In the same way, a believer who “redeems the time” takes each day as a chance to grow spiritually, to love, and to sow for eternity.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to live with prudence, to redeem the time, and to seek Your will in all things.
Keep me from foolish decisions and fill me with Your Spirit of wisdom and discernment.
Let Your peace guide my choices and let my life honor You every day.
It is in Jesus’ name, that I pray, Amen.
