If you are proud, you think too highly of yourself and exalt yourself above others. This is well described in Isaiah 14:
You said in your heart, « I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. »(Isaiah 14:13-14)
These words are about the king of Babylon, but unfortunately, they also apply to countless others. They describe the essence of human pride.
It is pride that causes humans to often think that they have all the answers and that they can get by just fine without God.
How absurd it is to equate ourselves with the Most High!
And yet, compared to Him, they are but « dust on the scales. »(see Isaiah 40:15)
And when we compare ourselves to others, don’t we sometimes feel better and more important than some of our colleagues, our neighbors or certain members of our family? That’s pride.
Let us know that « God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. »(James 4:6)
PRAYER:
Eternal our God, grant us to avoid the spirit of pride in our lives.
It is in the precious name of your son Jesus Christ that we pray, Amen.
