“Where there is no fence, the property is plundered; without a woman, a man groans and goes astray.”
(Ecclesiasticus / Sirach 36:25)
This verse reveals a simple yet profound truth: what is not protected will eventually be lost.
A field without a fence is exposed. Animals enter, thieves plunder, and the owner’s labor disappears. Not because the land is bad, but because it lacks protection.
It is the same with human life. Where there is no structure, no limits, no wisdom, life becomes vulnerable. Negative influences enter easily, uncontrolled desires take over, and blessings are scattered.
The “fence” represents wisdom, discipline, the fear of God, and divine order in life.
Then the verse adds:
“Without a woman, a man groans and goes astray.”
Here, the Word is not speaking merely about companionship, but about protection.
Just as a fence protects a field, a woman contributes to the protection of a man’s life.
She is a suitable helper:
a presence of balance,
a stabilizer,
a guardian of the home,
a voice that warns and brings things back into order.
She protects a man from inner disorder, wandering, and dispersion. She does not confine him — she preserves him. She does not limit him — she gives structure. In God’s design, she participates in the protection of his destiny.
The principle goes beyond marriage: God did not create us to live without relational protection. A life lived in isolation, without structure and without wisdom, is like an open field — sooner or later, it will be plundered.
God wants our lives to be surrounded by what He has provided for our balance, stability, and preservation.
So a question arises for each of us:
Does my life have a fence?
What protects my heart, my decisions, my future?
Have I accepted the limits, the wisdom, and the relationships God has placed for my balance?
Or am I living exposed, leaving my life open to every wind?
Because an unprotected life is not lost in one day… it is lost little by little.
PRAYER:
Lord, place Your protection around my life.
Give me wisdom, order, and the relationships that keep me from drifting.
Let nothing You have planted in me be lost.
Amen.
