After the prophet Jeremiah had prophesied that the city of the kingdom of Judah would certainly be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it, he was condemned to death and thrown by the men of the king of Judah into the storage-well of the king’s son Malchiah.
There was no water in the storage-well, but there was mud; and Jeremiah sank into the mud.
Fortunately, he was released thanks to the intervention of Ebed-Melech with Zedekiah, the king of Judah.
Ebed-Melech the Cushite spoke to the king thus:
* »My lord king,’ he said, ‘these men have done a wicked thing by treating the prophet Jeremiah like this: they have thrown him into the storage-well. He will starve to death there, since there is no more food in the city.' »*(Jeremiah 38:9)
It was then that the king gave this order to Ebed-Melech:
* »Take thirty men with you from here and pull the prophet Jeremiah out of the storage-well before he dies. »*(Jeremiah 38:10)
Indeed, some people would like us to be and remain sunk in a bad life comparable to that storage-well of Jeremiah where there was mud!
But, thanks to his goodness, God always sends us an « Ebed-Melech » to plead in our favor and help us get out of it.
May those who are condemned, marginalized or abandoned today not despair, God will send them an « Ebed-Melech ».
*PRAYER:*
Lord our God, give us people who speak up for us whenever we are in front of those who wish us harm.
It is in the precious name of your son Jesus Christ that we pray.
Amen.
