The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ, who was God’s only son, came to make us also children of God.
« To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. »(John 1:12)
We are therefore children of God in the same way as Jesus Himself.
Is it then possible that we are at the same time children of God and his servants?
No, this is impossible for two reasons:
First, God does not need servants because everything was accomplished on the cross by Jesus.
Second, a child cannot be a servant in his father’s house. Moreover, it is disagreeable to God to hear those whom He has made His children in His house continue to consider themselves His servants.
If in God’s eyes we were servants, as some say, Jesus would have told us to call God « our boss » or « our master », but he told us to call God « our Father » when we pray.
We are therefore children of God in His house and not His servants.
And even those to whom God has entrusted responsibilities in His house are not His servants. They remain His children just like us. Jesus calls them his friends:
« I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. »(John 15:15)
As his children, God gives us according to His will whatever we ask of Him. But if we consider ourselves servants in the house of God, we are already outside of His will.
PRAYER:
Our Father who art in heaven, grant us to be aware that we are rather your children than your servants.
It is in the precious name of your son Jesus Christ that we pray, Amen.
