As we are advised to not trust anyone, we are also advised to not be overconfident in ourselves, for just as others are fallible and helpless in the face of life’s hardest challenges, so are we.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”(Proverbs 3:5)
Being confident in yourself is not bad, it is actually good.
When you believe you can do something, it’s easier to do it than when you doubt or underestimate your abilities.
What is bad is being overconfident in yourself.
If we don’t place our fundamental trust in the Lord God, a healthy dose of self-confidence can easily evolve into « being wise in our own eyes » and « relying on our own understanding ».
And so, we find ourselves in the highest place that only God deserves.
The Bible gives a clear warning not to do so: “Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool.”(Proverbs 28:26)
We don’t need to rely on ourselves, because we need someone wiser, stronger and morally perfect. This person is the Lord our God.
PRAYER:
Eternal our God, grant us to never overly our self-confidence.
It is in the precious name of your son Jesus Christ that we pray, Amen.
