THE SIMPLICITY OF SALVATION Commentary on Paul’s Epistle to the Romans 10:1-21

In this passage, Paul speaks of his love for his people (the Jews) and explains how one is saved: not by works of the Law, but by faith in Jesus Christ.

Verse-by-verse explanation (simplified)

Romans 10:1
Paul says that he desires with all his heart that his people be saved. His desire is sincere: he prays for them.

Romans 10:2
He recognizes that they are zealous for God, but without true knowledge. In other words, they want to please God, but by following their own rules.

Romans 10:3
They have wanted to establish their own righteousness (by works and the Law), instead of accepting the righteousness that God gives by faith.

Romans 10:4
Christ is the end of the Law: whoever believes in Him receives righteousness (is declared righteous before God).

Romans 10:5-8
Moses spoke of righteousness through the Law (obeying everything in order to live).
But Paul says that the righteousness that comes from faith is different:
•You don’t need to look for Jesus in heaven or in the depths.
•The Word is close to you, in your mouth and in your heart.

Romans 10:9-10
How can you be saved?
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord
and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, then you will be saved.
•Faith in the heart justifies.
•Confession with the mouth saves.

Romans 10:11
Whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame (will not be disappointed).

Romans 10:12-13
There is no difference between Jew and Gentile: the same Lord blesses all who call on him.
Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Romans 10:14-15
Importance of preaching:
But how will people believe unless they hear?
How will they hear without a preacher?
How will there be preachers unless they are sent?
Paul emphasizes that evangelism is essential.
How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!

Romans 10:16-17
Problem of refusal:
Not everyone has obeyed the gospel.
Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of Christ.

Romans 10:18-21
Paul quotes the prophets: the message was proclaimed to all, but Israel refused to believe.
God said, « I was found by those who did not seek me (the pagans), » but Israel often rebelled despite God’s love and patience.

In summary, Paul loves his people and wants their salvation.
But they sought righteousness through their own efforts, not through faith.
Salvation is simple: believe in your heart and confess Jesus as Lord with your mouth.
This salvation is for all, Jews and non-Jews alike.
Faith comes through the preaching of the Word.
Unfortunately, many still refuse to obey the Gospel.

What should we remember?
Faith in Jesus, not our efforts, saves us.
The Word must be proclaimed for others to believe.
God opens the door to all, but each must respond with faith and obedience.
