WHAT CAN WE DO TO HAVE GOOD THOUGHTS ?

Having good thoughts is essential to maintaining a positive mindset and good mental health.
The Bible offers several teachings on how to cultivate good thoughts.
Here are some biblical principles to achieve this:

1. Meditate on God’s Word:
The Bible encourages meditating on the Scriptures to keep a pure and God-centered mind.
Joshua 1:8 says: « Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. »

2. Fill your mind with positive things:
Philippians 4:8 recommends focusing on what is good: « Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. »

3. Keep your heart pure:
Proverbs 4:23 emphasizes the watchfulness of the heart: « Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. » This involves watching what you let into your heart and mind.
It also involves avoiding negative influences: Limit your exposure to negative news, or toxic social media.

4. Avoid impure and negative thoughts:
The Bible encourages us to reject evil thoughts. Colossians 3:2 says, « Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things. »

5. Pray Regularly:
Prayer is a way to stay in communication with God and share your thoughts and concerns with Him.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 recommends that we « pray continually. »

6. Trust God:
Proverbs 3:5-6 urges us to trust God rather than our own understanding: « Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. »
Trusting God helps to dispel thoughts of worry and doubt.

7. Physical training:
Although the Bible places more emphasis on spiritual well-being, it encourages physical care, including physical exercise.
1 Timothy 4:8 says: « For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things… »
Physical training releases endorphins, the happy hormones, which promote a positive mindset.

8. Avoid Rumination:
When negative thoughts persist, try to replace them with constructive thoughts or keep yourself busy with an activity you enjoy.
In 2 Corinthians 10:5 it says:
« We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. »
So we must adopt an optimistic outlook: Try to see the bright side of things, even in difficult situations. A positive approach helps generate more optimistic thoughts.

By applying these principles, the Bible teaches that one can nurture a mind filled with good thoughts, aligned with God’s will and imbued with His peace.

Lord our God, help us to be able to cultivate good thoughts within us.
