After the angel Gabriel announced the great news of pregnancy to Mary, she replied:
« How will this be, since I am a virgin? »(Luke 1:34)
It is the same as when the angel Gabriel announced to Zacharias that he would soon become a father, he replied:
« How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years. »(Luke 1:18)
Both were in a situation where it was physically impossible to have a child.
Mary was a virgin and Zacharias (and his wife) were old AND sterile.
Marie therefore had no doubt that it would be done, but she asked * »how »*. She believed that God could circumvent his impossibility. Zacharias doubted the promise and asked if the word of God, transmitted by the angel, was true.
How many times do we also doubt that the Lord will accomplish what he has said, because of the wall of impossibilities that is in front of us?
Yet Numbers 23:19 reminds us that « God is not a man to lie, nor the son of a man to repent. »
Or, how often are we afraid to dare to ask God for something that our understanding believes impossible?
Yet Luke 1:37 reminds us that « Nothing is impossible with God. »
Our God is faithful, let us no longer doubt his promises, and because He is also Almighty, let us no longer be afraid to ask Him to do what we believe to be impossible but which can be good and useful to us.
PRAYER:
Our Father who art in heaven, give us full confidence in you.
It is in the precious name of your son Jesus Christ that we pray, amen.
