Abijam reigns over Jerusalem for only two years, succeeding his father Rehoboam, son of Solomon. During those two years he was not pleasing to God because he gave himself up to all the sins of his father. His son Asa succeeded him, but he pleased God and reigned for forty years.
« Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord… »(1Kings 15:11)
Indeed, in addition to great personal piety, Asa led a religious policy which consisted in promoting the exclusive worship of Yahweh, and in fighting against the worship of Canaanite divinities, by the expulsion of sacred prostitutes and the destruction of idols, stelae and other places of worship to these deities. (Read 1Kings 15:12)
However, despite his holy zeal, Asa could not completely purify the land of idolatry since he did not destroy all the high places. But his heart was with God.
Our interest should be in doing what is right in the sight of God.
Indeed, all our actions will never be perfect. But what will please God and make him favorable to us is the disposition of our hearts to want to do what is right in His eyes.
Let us always strive to do what is right in the eyes of God.
PRAYER:
Our Father who art in heaven, grant us to always do what is right in your eyes.
It is in the precious name of your son Jesus Christ that we pray, Amen.
