Zacchaeus, the tax collector perched on a tree, met Jesus and found himself transformed.
He promised to give back four times the amount he had dishonestly taken to others:
« If I have wronged someone, I will make him fourfold. » (Luke 19: 8)
At that time, tax collectors often superimposed citizens and pocketed surplus funds.
The eagerness with which Zacchaeus wanted to return the money and give half of his property to the poor showed an important transformation of his heart. He had previously been the type to take and, after meeting with Jesus, he resolved to make amends and become the kind to give.
The example of Zacchaeus can inspire us to make the same kind of change.
When God reminds us of the items we have taken, the taxes we have not paid or the wrongs we have done, we can honor them by righting the situation.
A debt is never too old for the honest person to rule.
PRAYER:
Lord God, give us the strength and the courage to give back everything that we have dishonestly taken from others.
It is in the precious name of your son Jesus Christ that we pray.
Amen.
