Zacchaeus, the tax collector perched in a tree, met Jesus and was transformed.
He promised to return four times the sum he had dishonestly taken from others:
* »I have cheated anybody I will pay him back four times the amount. »*(Luke 19:8)
In those days, tax collectors often overtaxed citizens and then pocketed the excess funds.
The eagerness with which Zacchaeus wanted to return the money and give half of his possessions to the poor showed a significant transformation of his heart. He had previously been a taker, and after his encounter with Jesus, he resolved to make amends and become a giver.
Zacchaeus’ example can inspire us to make the same kind of change.
When God reminds us of items we have taken, taxes we have not paid, or wrongs we have caused, we can honor Him by making things right.
A debt is never too old for the honest person to settle.
PRAYER:
Lord our God, give us strength and courage to return back all that we have dishonestly taken from others.
It is in the precious name of your son Jesus Christ that we pray.
Amen.
