The fifth chapter of the book of the prophet Isaiah speaks of the six types of people who will see calamity because of their iniquity:
The first type is made by people who are characterized by lust and the ardor to acquire and keep everything for themselves.
* »Woe to those who add house to house and join field to field… »*(Isaiah 5:8-10)
The second type is that of people characterized by drunkenness and worldly pleasures.
* »Woe to those who get up early to go after strong drink, and stay up late at night inflamed with wine. Nothing but harp and lyre, tambourine and pipe, and wine for their drinking bouts. Never a thought for the works of Yahweh… »*(Isaiah 5:11-17)
The Third Type are people who knowingly do evil in defiance of God and His judgment.
* »Woe to those who drag guilt along by the reins of duplicity, drag along sin as though with a cart rope… »*(Isaiah 5:18-19)
The fourth type is of those who confuse evil and good, light and darkness, sweetness and bitterness.
* »Woe to those who call what is bad, good, and what is good, bad, who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness, who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. »*(Isaiah 5:20 )
The fifth type is those who have a high opinion of themselves and their intelligence.
* »Woe to those who think themselves wise and believe themselves enlightened. »*(Isaiah 5:21)
The sixth type concerns those who use their energy to get drunk on the things of the world, who defend the evil that benefits them and blacken those who do good.
* »Woe to those whose might lies in wine bibbing, their heroism in mixing strong drinks, who acquit the guilty for a bribe and deny justice to the upright. »* (Isaiah 5:22-23)
The anger of the Lord will be kindled against all such, and the judgment of God will consume them and all their glory.
PRAYER:
Lord our God, grant us to be righteous in Your eyes.
