There are words that comfort… and others that demand commitment.
The word Christian appears in Scripture:
“It was at Antioch that the disciples were first known by the name of Christian.” (Acts 11:26)
This name was given in Antioch, not as a title claimed by believers, but as an identification given to those whose lives reflected Jesus Christ.
But before they were called Christians, they were called disciples.
“Then he said to everyone: « If anyone is willing to come after me: let him deny himself, and take up his cross every day, and follow me. »” (Luke 9:23)
The word disciple does not describe a religion, but a living relationship and a process of transformation.
A disciple learns.
A disciple follows.
A disciple obeys.
A disciple becomes.
“The disciple is not above his teacher. But each one will be perfected, if he is like his teacher.” (Luke 6:40)
To be a disciple is not just to believe in Christ—
it is to be shaped by Him until you resemble Him.
“If you will abide in my word, you will truly be my disciples.
[32]And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” (John 8:31–32)
Today, the word “Christian” can sometimes become a cultural identity, a habit, or a simple declaration.
But a disciple cannot remain hidden.
His life speaks.
His choices testify.
His transformation is visible.
“Not all who say to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the kingdom of heaven. But whoever does the will of my Father, who is in heaven, the same shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 7:21)
That is why saying:
“Call me a disciple of Christ, not a Christian,”
is not rejecting a word—
it is rejecting superficial faith.
It is choosing a life of real commitment.
It is embracing the cross, not just the name.
For Jesus did not say:
“Go and make Christians.”
But He commanded:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19)
Between the two, there is a profound difference
between carrying a title…
and carrying a transformed life.
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus,
make me a true disciple,
not only in name, but in life.
Teach me to follow You and obey You daily.
Amen.
