Some people say, “I love those who love me and I hate those who hate me,” claiming that this is also what God says in the Bible.
However, that is not what Proverbs 8:17 means:
“I love those who love me. And those who stand watch for me until morning shall discover me.” (Proverbs 8:17)
This verse does not mean that God hates those who do not love Him. Rather, it teaches that those who love God and seek Him wholeheartedly enjoy a special fellowship with Him.
In fact, God loved us before we ever loved Him:
“Therefore, let us love God, for God first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)
Even more, God demonstrated His love for us while we were still sinners:
“God demonstrates his love for us in that, while we were yet sinners, at the proper time.” (Romans 5:8)
That is why Jesus commands us:
“Love your enemies.” (Matthew 5:44)
God’s love is not limited to those who love Him. And since God is love, His children are called to love not only their friends but also their enemies.
PRAYER:
Lord, teach us to love as You have loved us.
Give us the strength to love even those who do not love us.
