As Jesus set out on his way, a man ran up and fell on his knees before him: Good master, asked him, what must I do to inherit eternal life?
Jesus looked at him and loved him and said to him:
« …Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. »(Mark 10:21)
Verse 22 tells us that, grieved by this word, « this man went away sad, because he had great wealth. »(Mark 10:23)
Why was this man sad?
It’s because Jesus had just said to him a word that was difficult to carry out: « abandon his possessions to which he was attached ».
It is the same for Christians today: they only want to be blessed with material goods: nice cars, nice houses, well-being; but care little about wanting to inherit eternal life.
They are so attached to the perishable goods of this world and not of the Kingdom of God
« What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? »(Mark 8:36)
It is true that we need the goods of the world for our comfort, but since they are only for a short time, they should not prevent us from being, above all, concerned with the inheritance of eternal life.
PRAYER:
Lord our God, grant us to be more concerned about the inheritance of eternal life than about the immediate enjoyment of the goods of the world.
It is in the precious name of your son Jesus Christ that we pray, Amen.
