“When the sun was setting, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a dread, great and dark, invaded him.”
(Genesis 15:12)
God had made great promises to Abram.
He had promised him countless descendants and a lasting inheritance.
To confirm His covenant, He instructed Abram to prepare a sacrifice.
Abram obeyed. He prepared the animals and drove away the birds of prey that came down upon them.
Then, at the decisive moment, a deep sleep fell upon him.
This sleep was neither a sign of weakness nor a lack of vigilance. It came from God Himself.
The same Hebrew word (tardemah) is used when God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep before creating Eve.
Why did God put Abram to sleep?
Because He wanted to show him that the fulfillment of His promise did not depend on Abram, but on God alone.
While Abram was sleeping, God was at work. While he was unable to intervene, God was confirming His covenant.
Abram could add nothing, earn nothing, and accomplish nothing.
Everything rested on God’s faithfulness.
This is a precious lesson for us today.
We often do everything we can to help God fulfill what He has promised.
We rely on our abilities, our strategies, and our efforts. Yet some of God’s works are far beyond human strength.
God calls us to obey, just as Abram obeyed.
But the fulfillment of the promise belongs to God.
When our resources run out, His faithfulness remains. When our strength reaches its limit, His power continues to work.
What God has spoken, He is able to accomplish.
So do not focus on your weaknesses.
Do not measure God’s promises by the size of your abilities. Instead, look to the One who made the promise.
God fulfills everything He promises, not because man is able, but because God is faithful.
PRAYER:
Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness.
Teach me to trust You more and to rest in Your promises.
I believe that what You have spoken, You will accomplish in Your perfect time.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
