“ »It is bad, it is bad, » says every buyer; and when he has withdrawn, then he will boast.” (Proverbs 20:14)
Bargaining is a part of everyday life in many cultures.
There is nothing wrong with seeking a better price or trying to get a good deal. However, Christians are called to distinguish themselves by their conduct, even in their most ordinary transactions.
In this proverb, the buyer belittles an item in order to obtain a discount and then congratulates himself on his cleverness.
Such an attitude is based on cunning rather than honesty.
A Christian may bargain, but he must avoid deception.
“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord. But whoever acts faithfully pleases him.” (Proverbs 12:22)
He must also seek a fair price without trying to take advantage of his neighbor.
“A deceitful scale is an abomination with the Lord, and a fair weighing is his will.” (Proverbs 11:1)
A Christian must also respect the seller and his work.
Behind every product are often efforts, time, and sacrifices.
“Therefore, all things whatsoever that you wish that men would do to you, do so also to them.” (Matthew 7:12)
Finally, he must guard himself against greed.
Saving money is a good thing, but not at the cost of his Christian testimony.
“Be cautious and wary of all avarice.” (Luke 12:15)
To bargain as a Christian is to seek a reasonable agreement with honesty, fairness, and respect.
A discount obtained through deceit is never worth the loss of one’s testimony or the peace of a clear conscience before God.
PRAYER:
Lord,
Teach me to glorify You in all my transactions.
Give me an honest, fair, and respectful heart toward others. May my testimony remain faithful, even in the small matters of daily life.
In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
